I will likely never drive a Porsche.

I can see it now, that I was so wrong before.
I thought you were a bot, designed to collect all our personal information thru the use of clever conversational algorithms and a dash of social engineering.
But you truly know compassion.
You’re a real boy now, Pinocchio.

Not the right attitude.
That may end up being true in the end, but unless you are something like 103 at the moment... you never know.
Stay around the right circles with the appropriate crowd (and I mean the real enthusiasts, not the ones who mostly care about showing off their Gucci loafers) and it
will
happen. Trust me.
You just cannot imagine the miracles that happen when like-minded people get together, even if it is just for idle chat. Car/aircraft/chess/whatever aficionados like and help each other. One thing leads to another etc.

Looks like it would be a cool project car. Just hope its not one of those “I know what I have” owners

Jeez, man, no. There are so many R/RS/RSR/ST replicas around that I am getting truly sick of them. And people are destroying good original cars to build them too.
I know of a man who in the late 70s acquired an earlyish second hand 911. A dedicated fashion victim, he followed the fad for big wings (as in “fenders”), big whaletails, BBS wheels and such, and modified it accordingly. He also changed the bumpers (and it was a long-bonnet one, so he had to replace that too) and the seats, and fitted a slightly larger engine.
Car in question is (or rather, was) a genuine
1973 Touring RS.
He is still trying to track down all the original parts he sold decades ago.
Each to his or her own though.

Ain’t that the truth!
I let others drive mine, if they have manual shifting skills… And I like them.

Because in the late 70s the RS was just an old high-performance car. Yesterday’s news, as it were. Besides, in the late 70s-early 80s the German tuners’ craze of outrageous modifications started in force. Obviously he felt that his 911 did not look special enough. He is a man of wealth but not of taste, needless to say.
I think interest in the RS and such did not really go up until the mid- or late 80s. Now of course the whole thing is ridiculous.
I still remember when you could buy a nice-but-not-perfect E30 M3 for around the equivalent 6000 dollars (in Europe). At the time you could spend another 12,000 dollars in ex-factory exchange recon engine and gearbox, with all the official BMW warranties etc. However, most people who would actually love to have that car today (or even then...) were simply paying the equivalent 20,000 dollars for the latest hot hatch.
I am not sure I got my dates right, but around 1990 you could still buy a 356 coupé for almost pocket money, and even shitty Speedsters (whose value had started rising steadily since the early eighties) were almost affordable.

A cautionary tale, however, regarding “bastardised”, “bitsa” cars.
An acquaintance of mine introduced me once to a gent who buys and sells interesting cars for a living.
Years ago this guy found for sale a rather dilapidated-looking 2.4 S. Those were already in great demand as historic rally cars so he thought that if offered to the right Porsche specialist he could make some money –even if all the rest of the car was a mish-mash of rather mismatched parts.
But this guy, however, has been in the trade for decades so as soon as he got hold of the chassis and engine number he got in touch with Zuffenhausen. It turned out to be one of the factory RS prototypes.
I could also tell you the story of the guy who unknowingly bought in a scrapyard the whole front clip from an Alfa Romeo 75 Turbo
Evoluzione –
a 1987 homologation special, only 500 made for Group A racing– and even complained to them later that the wings were different and did not match the bodykit of his 75 3.0 V6 –similar to a Milano– he had just smashed.
I know the story because I bought the engine after the scrappy owners mentioned they had a 75 Turbo with a funny bodykit and funky side graphics.
You just never know.
